In August, Dr. Trilce Estrada, an Associate Professor in the Department of Computer Science at UNM and a faculty member of the NM SMART Grid Center Decision-Support research team was awarded the 2019 ACM SIGHPC Emerging Woman Leader in Technical Computing award.

AMC SIGHPC is an alphabet soup acronym for the Association for Computing Machinery's Special Interest Group on High Performance Computing. The group bestows this international award every two years in recognition of an individual's outstanding early-career achievements and commitment to cultivating the technical computing community through mentorship and service. In the official news release, John West, Chair of SIGHPC, explained, “Dr. Estrada’s technical contributions increase the ability of researchers to effectively conduct their work using large-scale computing, and her volunteer contributions in our community provide a model of leadership that includes future generations of leaders as well."

Dr. Estrada earned her bachelor’s degree in Computer Systems at Universidad de Guadalajara, a master’s degree in Computer Science at the National Institute of Astrophysics, and her PhD in Computer Science at the University of Delaware before joining the UNM Computer Science Department in 2013.

"Dr. Estrada's expertise in the fields of Big Data Analytics, Machine Learning, and Distributed Systems are invaluable for the NM SMART Grid Center project and her passion for improving the participation of women in computing-related fields is inspirational," NM SMART Grid Center PI, William Michener, remarked, "we are honored to have her on our team."
