NM ISE Net Joins Forces with NM PED

By Selena Connealy

The New Mexico Informal Science Education Network (NM ISE Net) has joined forces with the New Mexico Public Education Department (NM PED) to support K-12 science teacher professional learning across the state. For the second year, NM ISE Net educators participated in a week-long facilitator training in preparation for summer teacher institutes in Albuquerque and Las Cruces. This year, 600 elementary- and middle-school teachers will participate in week-long Making Sense of Science courses in Energy, Matter and Earth Systems which will deepen their content knowledge, provide pedagogical tools for helping students make sense of science concepts, and make links to literacy topics like reading, writing and scientific discourse.

This effort is connected to the NM EPSCoR-funded energy teacher institutes which NM ISE Net members present in different communities around the state each summer. The 2016 Energize NM teacher institute will be held at the NM Museum of Space History in Alamogordo in July and teachers from across south east NM will attend.

The mission of the New Mexico Informal Science Education Network is to provide opportunities and resources for informal educators to work together to impact science teaching, science learning, and science awareness throughout the state of New Mexico. The NM Museum of Natural History & Science leads NM ISE Net with support from NM EPSCoR. Learn more about NM ISE Net members and activities.
