NM EPSCoR Alumni selected for UNM ADVANCE Women in STEM Awards
When UNM ADVANCE announced their Women in STEM awards on June 17th, the NM EPSCoR team was elated to learn that three of the eight women have NM EPSCoR ties.
Becky Bixby, a Research Assistant Professor of Biology and Associate Director, Water Resources, was part of both the “Climate Change Impacts on New Mexico’s Mountain Sources of Water” and the “Energize New Mexico” NM EPSCoR projects, sharing her expertise in aquatic ecology and hydrology to investigate water-related fire impacts and possibilities for bioalgal energy development. Lani Tsinnajinnie, now an Assistant Professor in community and regional planning, was also involved with the “Climate Change Impacts on New Mexico’s Mountain Sources of Water” project as a PhD student from New Mexico Tech working on the Climate and Hydrology Research Team. Finally, Maryam Hojati, an Assistant Professor in civil, construction and environmental engineering, participated in the 2020 NM EPSCoR Early Career Leadership Workshop held at Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge in early January.
Although we have our favorites, all eight of these incredible women represent the outstanding progress UNM has made towards increasing diversity in STEM and speak to the remarkable research that can happen with the right support.
