New Mexico Research Symposium Highlights
NM EPSCoR
What do you get when you combine 19 education institutions, nearly 50 posters, and 150 attendees? The 2019 New Mexico Research Symposium hosted in collaboration with the New Mexico Academy of Science (NMAS)!
This year’s Research Symposium, held at the Hyatt Regency in Albuquerque on Saturday, November 2nd, welcomed attendees from all corners of New Mexico, with students ranging from high school to post-doctoral attending and presenting their research to a diverse audience.
The program kicked off with six oral sessions with topics ranging from Chemical, Physical, and Energy Systems, to STEM Education and the NM SMART Grid Center. To view the oral session abstracts, click here.
The keynote speaker, New Mexico Higher Education Deputy Secretary of Teaching, Learning and Assessment, Gwen Perea Warniment, PhD, gave a rousing call to action and explained the strategic goals of the Higher Education Department under the leadership of governor, Michelle Lujan Grisham.
NMAS, along with the American Chemical Society, presented the 2019 Outstanding Science Teacher Awards. Since 1968, NMAS has recognized science teachers who provide exemplary opportunities for students’ STEM learning. The 2019 awardees are Mark Walker, a biology and forensics teacher at the Early College Academy and Career Enrichment Center in Albuquerque, and Amanda Pacheco-Suazo, a kindergarten teacher at Mission Avenue Elementary School in Albuquerque.
The Research Symposium concluded with a judged poster session, with nearly 50 posters from high school, undergraduate, graduate, post-docs, and faculty. To view the poster abstracts, click here.
Keep an eye out for the New Mexico Journal of Science in early 2020, where all abstracts will be published.
Thank you to all the poster judges, oral session moderators, industry partners, sponsors, and attendees who made this event possible. We look forward to seeing you at the next Research Symposium which will be held on November 7, 2020.
