2023 Great List of Paid Summer Internships

Hey, New Mexico students! Don’t have time to go looking for summer internships? No problem, we’ve done it for you.

 

Undergraduates

STEM Advancement Program (STEMAP) by NM SMART Grid Center

Who: Undergraduates students from New Mexico regional universities, community colleges and tribal colleges. Students from UNM, NMT, and NMSU main campus are not eligible.

What: Students participate in SMART Grid research virtually, meeting on various online platforms including Zoom and Slack. Students are expected to work about 20 hours a week, and are mentored by faculty, technical mentors, and SMART Grid project students.

  • Orientation Week    June 5–9
    Students take part in a week of training workshops. Topics include an introduction to SMART Grid research areas, research ethics, communication, data management, and technical areas such as computer coding and power systems.
  • STEMAP Research    June 12–July 16
    Student teams work with NM SMART Grid-funded faculty and students at their respective research sites at NMSU, NMT, or UNM main campuses.
  • End of the Summer Symposium    July 27–July 28
    Students present their research to their research teams, faculty, mentors, family, and friends.

When: June 5–July 28, 2023 (8 weeks)

Benefits: $4,000 stipend, meal allowance, housing stipend, and 3 credits of independent study from NMSU

BigDatA Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) at NMSU

Who: Applicants must be U.S. citizens, U.S. nationals, or permanent residents of the United States. Applicants must be Undergraduate students. An undergraduate student is a student who is enrolled in a degree program (part-time or full-time) leading to a baccalaureate or associate degree. In particular,

  • Students who are transferring from one college or university to another and are enrolled at neither institution during the intervening summer may participate.
  • High school graduates who have been accepted at an undergraduate institution but who have not yet started their undergraduate study are also eligible to participate.
  • Students who have received their bachelor’s degrees and are no longer enrolled as undergraduates are generally not eligible to participate.

What: The site’s research projects will focus on equipping students with skills and knowledge related to big data analytics in Cyber-physical Systems (CPS). The CPS will be exemplified by four main application areas: smart grids, wireless sensor networks, smart homes for the elderly and disabled, and disaster response.

When: May 22–July 29, 2023 (10 weeks) 

Where:  NMSU campus in Las Cruces, NM

Benefits: $6,000 stipend, housing, meals, roundtrip airfare to Las Cruces, New Mexico

Research Experiences for Undergraduates: Emerging Issues in Cybersecurity 

Who: US citizens or permanent residents enrolled full time at a college or university majoring in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Information Technology, Cybersecurity, Software Engineering, Computer Information Systems, or other closely related majors. Junior or senior academic standing preferred. 3.0 or better GPA with adequate knowledge of programming (C, C++, Python, Java, or MATLAB). Must be committed to working full time (40 hours per week) during the 10-week program. Minorities and women are strongly encouraged to apply.

What: The REU site is hosted jointly by the Department of Computer Science and Engineering and the New Mexico Cybersecurity Center of Excellence at New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology (New Mexico Tech). The goals of this REU site include providing students experience in cutting edge research in cybersecurity, broadening participation in computing, motivating students to pursue graduate studies in computer science, and preparing the future cybersecurity workforce.

When: May 22–July 29, 2023 (10 weeks)

Where: Housing will be provided in on-campus New Mexico Tech dormitories.

Benefits: $6,000 stipend, plus a $1,400 food allowance, and up to $600 for travel costs to and from Socorro, NM

Center for Advanced Energy Studies REU

Who: In order to participate (and receive payments/reimbursements), students must meet the following requirements:

  • Students must be either a U.S. citizen, U.S. national or Permanent Resident of the U.S.
  • Must be an undergraduate student enrolled in a degree program (part-time or full-time) leading to a baccalaureate or associate degree
  • Have a Cumulative GPA of 2.8 or greater on a 4.0 scale

What: During the summer research experience, students will network with and learn from Idaho National Laboratory scientists, have opportunities to share their work with an active research community and co-author publications and presentations based on their research findings.

When: May 22–July 28, 2023 

Where: Center for Advanced Energy Studies near Idaho Falls, ID

Benefits: $6,000 stipend. Housing and a meal per diem will also be provided. Travel allowances are also available to participants.

Quantum Undergraduate Research Experience at CHTM (QU-REACH)

Who: 

  • Applicants must be 18 years or older at the beginning of the program.
  • Domestic and International students are welcome to apply.
  • No specific background is required, but 1-3 years of undergraduate coursework in a physics, chemistry, math, or engineering major is preferred.

What: Quantum Technology harnesses the unique features of quantum mechanical systems for devices that hold the promise to revolutionize the fields of computing, communications, and sensing and deepen our understanding of the universe. QU-REACH leverages the longstanding and growing research infrastructure in Quantum Technology at UNM to provide New Mexico undergraduate students with an early hands-on research experience in Quantum Technology. Projects are available in a broad range of disciplines (Physics, Chemistry, Electrical Engineering, etc.) related to the three cornerstones of Quantum Technology: Quantum Sensing, Quantum Communications, and Quantum Computing.

When: May 30–August 4, 2023 

Where: University of New Mexico, Main Campus, Albuquerque

Benefits: $6,000 stipend. A limited number of housing stipends for students attending schools outside of the Albuquerque metro area will be available.

New Mexico INBRE Summer Experience

Who:  Students must be eligible to work in the U.S. and enrolled in the below institutions to be eligible to apply:

  • Dona Ana Community College
  • Eastern New Mexico University
  • New Mexico Highlands University
  • New Mexico Tech
  • Northern New Mexico College
  • Western New Mexico University
  • Select institutions in Alaska, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, and Wyoming
  • *New Mexico State University-Main Campus
  • *University of New Mexico
    • *These institutions are only eligible for the NISE-Bioinformatics program

What: An 8-week full-time summer research experience for undergraduates, featuring four different programs. NISE-Prep, NISE-Bootcamp, NISE-Internship and NISE-Bioinformatics are great ways to form connections with students from across New Mexico, and to enhance lab and research skills. The summer experience concludes with a presentation of results at a research symposium during the first week of August.

When: Beginning no later than June 1, 2023 through the first week of August 2023

Benefits: Students are compensated (approximately $5000, details differ by institution for NISE-Prep) for their participation, and housing is provided for those traveling to participate in NISE-Bootcamp or NISE-Internship.

Center for Bio-mediated & Bio-inspired Geotechnics REU

Who: 

  • U.S. citizen or permanent resident
  • Must be planning to enroll and be a Sophomore, Junior, or Senior college-level student in Fall 2023
  • Attend U.S. community college, college, or non-CBBG university
  • Ability to work 40 hours per week for the entire program
  • Students with disabilities, veterans, and those from traditionally underrepresented groups in STEM are encouraged to apply

What: The goal of the CBBG is to develop sustainable biologically-controlled and -inspired solutions in the areas of:

  • Hazard mitigation
  • Environmental protection and restoration
  • Infrastructure construction
  • Subsurface exploration and excavation

When: May 30–July 21, 2023 (8 weeks)

Where: NMSU/ASU/Georgia Tech/UC Davis

Benefits: $5,000 stipend. Travel/lodging available if needed, but preference will be given to local participants/commuters.

Research Distributed Research Experiences for Undergraduates (DREU) by CRA

Who: Applicants should be students who are pursuing an undergraduate degree at an institution in the U.S or its territories. Applicants should be interested in doing research in computing. International Students may apply, however most of the funds for the DREU program are restricted to US citizens and permanent residents, so the number of non-US student participants will be limited. Priority will be given to students who have completed two to three years in a CS or CE major by the program start date, however all applicants are considered. Additionally, priority will be given to persons from populations underrepresented in computing including women, Black/African American, Native American/Alaskan Native/ Pacific Islander, Hispanic/Latinx, LGBTQAI+, Persons with Disabilities, and Veterans.

What: The objective of the Computing Research Association (CRA) DREU program is to increase the number of persons from populations underrepresented in computing including women, Black/African American, Native American/Alaskan Native/ Pacific Islander, Hispanic/Latinx, LGBTQAI+, Persons with Disabilities, and Veterans.

When: Flexible but a total of 10 weeks (40hrs/week) generally starting in May and ending in July

Where: Depends on location

Benefits: $7,000 stipend, up to $750 relocation budget when appropriate

Graduate Students

NM SMART Grid Center Externships

Who: Graduate students with existing assistantships with the NM SMART Grid Center. Graduate students must currently reside in and be eligible to work in the United States.

What: Research opportunities that enable graduate students to spend a semester at a national lab, industry or research facility, government agency, or higher education institution other than their degree-granting institution. Activities during this exchange may include conducting research at a host institution, participating in training, or taking courses at the host institution.

When: Spring 2023 & Summer 2023

Benefits: Up to $4,000 to cover lodging, travel, and living expenses

NETL Professional Internship Program

Who: Be an undergraduate or graduate student in good standing at a regionally accredited college/university, or a post-baccalaureate within two years of graduation. Have an overall minimum GPA of 2.5/4.0. Be at least 18 years of age at the time of appointment, provide proof of coverage under a health insurance plan prior to the beginning of the internship. 

What: The Professional Internship Program is designed to introduce undergraduate and graduate students to the challenges of conducting energy research. It is an opportunity to network with world-class scientists using state-of-the-art equipment and to expand students’ knowledge in their field of study while exposing them to new areas of basic and applied research. Participants interact daily with assigned mentors who guide research activities during the internship. These research activities help transition classroom theory into hands-on experience, helping provide answers to today’s pressing scientific questions. 

When: Rolling. Term appointments range from two weeks to one year renewable up to four or five years.

Benefits: Stipend – All internship programs provide a weekly stipend based upon academic classification and experience. Insurance – Insurance is a requirement for the Professional Internship Program. Inbound/Outbound Travel – Awards are made on a case-by-case basis. To qualify, your residence must be more than 50 miles from the laboratory. On-station Travel – Classified as travel during your appointment, on-station travel is designed to enhance your learning experience by promoting attendance at conferences, workshops, and other educational meetings. Awards are made on a case-by-case basis. Most short-term (e.g., summer) appointments do not qualify for on-station travel.

All Students

QEM: Talent Development and Innovation and Sciences (TDIS) Summer Internship

Who: Must be a citizen or national of the United States. Must be a currently enrolled student and have successfully completed at least the sophomore year at an accredited, degree-granting institution by the start of the program. Must be majoring in one of the following fields: mathematics, science (life or physical sciences, computer science, behavioral sciences, or social sciences), technology, or engineering. Must be returning to a degree-granting institution the following academic year, either at the undergraduate or graduate level. Must have a significant interest in raising the level of awareness about: the circumstances that prevent minority communities from receiving a quality education; programs and strategies being implemented to address these issues; and policies and legislation that have an impact on STEM education. Must be committed to participating in the program for the full ten-week period. Must be willing to participate in a telephone/video interview if chosen as a finalist.

What: Students will have opportunities to conduct research to become familiar with NSF programs and strategies to address issues related to under-representation in STEM. Activities will also develop personal and leadership skills and increase awareness of policies and legislation that have an impact on STEM education.

When: May 30–August 4, 2023

Where: Virtual

Benefits: Taxable stipends will be available for full-time participation in the entire ten-week program. Undergraduate students will receive taxable stipends of $6,000 and graduate students at NSF will receive taxable stipends of $7,000. Funding of up to $1,200 to attend conferences and other professional development activities during the summer and the next academic year.
